The NeverEnding Story is a visually dynamic, incredibly imaginative children’s movie with tons of excellent pre-CGI creatures and effects – like George Lucas’s Star Wars universe populated by Henson’s Muppets. Revisit it, or discover it on the Golden Screen.

Bastian Bux (Barret Oliver) is a quiet, sensitive boy who escapes from school bullies by reading a good book. Bastian becomes particularly engrossed reading a mysterious book called The Neverending Store (that a local bookstore owner warned him not to read), which details a young boy’s quest to save a fantasy world called Fantasia. The threat of a devouring force called ‘The Nothing’ and visits to a place called ‘the Swamps of Sadness’ give this children’s adventure film an existential edge, making it as imaginative as it is colourful. Based on a German novel of the same name, when it was released in 1984 The NeverEnding Story was the most expensive film made outside the U.S. and USSR.
