Carmin Tropical is a gripping murder mystery about two muxes from the traditional Zapotec culture of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. A muxe is a biological male who dresses and behaves in ways characteristic of females within this culture. They are commonly seen as a third gender.
Mabel, a talented singer, left her hometown of Juchitán to elope, but has deep regrets about leaving her friends and family behind – especially her close friend, Daniela. After learning that Daniela has been brutally murdered, Mabel returns home to reconnect with her past.
Distraught at the lack of progress being made by the police, Mabel sets out to learn the true identity of the killer. After discovering photos hidden in Daniela’s room, Mabel begins to piece together what really happened. Mabel’s friends — including a police officer, a handsome taxi driver and Daniela’s family — all help with her quest to uncover the truth, but is everyone as they appear to be?
Carmin Tropical, the second feature film by award winning director Rigoberto Perezcano, received top prize at the Morelia International Film Festival.
This eerie and atmospheric whodunnit mixes drama and tension with melancholic beauty, exploring themes including gender, homophobia, friendship and familial love. The film builds to an absolutely nailbiting climax that is not to be missed.
"The craftsmanship and efficiency the movie displays, especially in the last sequence, it's a must see." – La Jornada Semanal
