This film tackles the complexities of commitment, desire and attraction. After eighteen years of marriage and three children, Frank and Alice have built a seemingly happy family, but their sexual spark has waned. After Frank admits his growing sexual attraction to men, he and Alice work together to return their lives to a semblance of normality. However, on a vacation, Alice is devastated to learn that Frank has pursed his newfound attraction to a man named Pablo. During the course of the story, the audience are never shown the newfound joyous experience of Frank’s new relationship, but are focused instead on the shrinking world of Alice and her attempts to recover the fragments left behind.
A highly emotional film, What’s Between Us captures the aftermath of a family dealing with their husband and father coming out as gay. The camera rarely strays from the bedroom that becomes the metaphorical centre of the marriage and family life – from Frank and Alice’s drunken, date night bliss to the Alice’s slow, nervous breakdown. The script is distilled from translated directorial notes on recorded conversations of women’s experience, creating the intense and heart-rending dialogue in the film. A relatively common tale of a gay husband coming out is transformed into a simple, subtle and humane narrative that will leave audiences touched.
