With marriage equality proudly earned in the States, and hopes that Australia is not too far behind, queer communities are looking to new arenas in which to fight for equality. At this turning point for LGBTIQ rights, this fast paced documentary about LGBTIQ people in American sport could not come at a better time.
Game Face, directed by Michiel Thomas, follows the lives of Fallon Fox, a determined lesbian woman of colour and the first transgender Mixed Martial Arts fighter, and Terence Clemens, a young gay man and college basketballer negotiating coming out to his teammates as he tries to follow a career in professional sports.
The stories of these two subjects with very different experiences are counterpoised perfectly, and the inclusion of other professional athletes is a clear and defiant declaration of this new battle for recognition and acceptance of LGBTIQ people in what has been, until now an incredibly normative field.
This film avoids all the usual stereotypes and instead celebrates the achievements, both personal and political, of two individuals who refuse to be defined by their identities. With fighting spirit aplenty, this film will have you grinning all the way.

"As engaging, thoughtful and inspiring as its subjects. A timely documentary focuses on sports as a crucial frontier in LGBT rights." - The Hollywood Reporter
"This is the kind of film that will change the world. It will shift our societal ideas of what defines physical (and emotional) strength and dominance, and how the athletic world has consistently separated female and male genders without regard for what lies beyond the gender binary." - After Ellen
