DAVID DRAKE’S CLASSIC GAY PLAY RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA, BUT WITH A DIFFERENCE...
Lambert House Enterprises (by arrangement with Paul Lucas Productions) in association with Gingers and the Oxford Hotel are proud to announce a limited season of performances of the acclaimed OBIE award winning play “THE NIGHT LARRY KRAMER KISSED ME”.
The play will perform for NINE PERFORMANCES ONLY.
The New York Times said of this show… “From the ambience of a gay gymnasium to a sex drenched night in a gay bar.. Drake’s play is riveting, frenetic, frank, touching and very funny”.
David Drake, who wrote this biting, hilarious, provocative and moving series of monologues saw the show first performed off Broadway more than twenty years ago. Drake has updated the final monologue (which now takes the show to the year 2021) and this new version will be performed for the first time in our production.
Earlier in 2013, a one night only 20th anniversary production of the show was performed on Broadway by ten of the top young rising male talents of the current Broadway generation. The show itself was also performed by the man himself, David Drake, during the Sydney Mardi Gras in 1994 at Belvoir St Theatre.
This current version will feature two actors – BEN HUDSON, fresh from his success as Lurch in “The Addams Family” and his role in “Love Never Dies” as well as a finalist in this year’s International Cabaret showcase.
Ben will be joined by the the very busy JAMES WRIGHT, who is also currently hosting the new comedy cabaret sensation “The Jambles Rambles Show”. James also made a huge impression last year in the gay plays “Relative Merits” and “Three Winters Green” and the revival at King St Theatre of “Butterflies are Free”.
Producer, Les Solomon, says the show is rarely performed by two actors - “It has been performed many times as a one man show most notably by the author David Drake who also made the movie version of the show in 1997. Last year it was performed on Broadway by ten actors.
This version will have two actors both encompassing various aspects of the one persona.”
The show will be directed by exciting new talent KYNAN FRANCIS, fresh from a triumph in the sell out season of the play “Take Me Out” in Singapore and a long history of acting and directing credits including Universal Studios and Harvest Rain theatre Co. Kynan is a drama graduate of QUT university.
“The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me” follows one young gay man from his early recognition of being different by seeing productions of musicals such as “West Side Story” and “A Chorus Line”, through to his political and gay awakening by seeing the classic Larry Kramer play “The Normal Heart” - through to his maturity into adult hood during the classic period in America when the gym culture and the disco gay club lifestyle became the norm. The play finally rejoices in the acceptance of gay marriage and all aspects of the gay lifestyle in a not too distant utopian future.
Very raunchy, very real, very frank and very funny ‘THE NIGHT LARRY KRAMER KISSED ME’ plays for nine perfortmances only as a late show at 11pm at GINGERS above THE OXFORD HOTEL DARLINGHURST. With an early 8pm show on Feb 27th.
